Lowering of the Flag

Two-Day Mourning for
Captain Eldon Kirkconnell

The Cayman Islands observed a two-day period of mourning in honour of the life and service of Captain Eldon Kirkconnell from Thursday, June 29th, to Friday, June 30th.

Throughout that period, the Cayman Islands flag was flown at half-mast on all public buildings.

Senior government officials and members of the Kirkconnell family had taken part in a flag-lowering ceremony at the Government Administration Building on the morning of June 29th as a gesture of respect to Captain Kirkconnell.

Captain Kirkconnell had served in the Legislative Assembly and the Executive Council of the Cayman Islands from 1962 to 1972 and had been awarded the OBE (Order of the British Empire) by the late Queen Elizabeth II.

He passed away on Thursday, June 8th, at the age of 96.
